Envly Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

What is Envly?

Accepted Answer

Envly is a developer tool for managing environment variables across projects. It provides a shared web workspace and a CLI for organizing variables used by software applications.

Question 2

Is Envly free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Envly has a free plan with up to two projects, two team members, and unlimited environment variables. Paid plans provide higher project and team limits.

Question 3

What is Envly used for?

Accepted Answer

Envly is used to store, organize, share, import, and export application configuration such as API keys, database URLs, service tokens, and other environment variables. Variables are grouped by project and deployment environment.

Question 4

Does Envly support .env files?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Envly can import variables from a .env file and export an environment as a .env file from the web application. The CLI can also export a project archive containing separate .env files for development, staging, and production.

Question 5

Can Envly manage multiple environments?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Envly project separates its variables into development, staging, and production environments so values for one deployment stage do not have to be reused in another.

Question 6

Does Envly have a CLI?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The official Envly CLI supports browser-based authentication, listing projects and environments, inspecting variables, and exporting environment-specific .env files.

Question 7

Can Envly manage development, staging and production variables?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Development, staging, and production are created as separate environments for each project. The same variable key can therefore have a different value in each environment.

Question 8

How are environment variables stored?

Accepted Answer

Environment variable values are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before they are stored in the database. The Envly backend decrypts them when they are requested by an authenticated user who has access to the project.

Question 9

Who is Envly for?

Accepted Answer

Envly is designed for individual developers and software teams that need a shared, structured place for project configuration across common deployment environments.

Question 10

Can teams collaborate in Envly?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Project administrators can invite team members and assign a project role. This lets a team work with the same project configuration without sending .env files through chat or email.

Question 11

Which project roles does Envly support?

Accepted Answer

Envly supports Admin, Dev, and Viewer roles. Admins and Devs can modify environment variables, while Viewers have read-only access to project information available to them.

Question 12

Does Envly support custom environments?

Accepted Answer

Not currently. Envly uses three predefined environments—development, staging, and production—for every project. Teams that require custom environment names should account for this before adopting Envly.

Question 13

Can Envly be self-hosted?

Accepted Answer

Envly is currently offered as a managed service at envly.dev. A public self-hosting option is not currently documented.

Question 14

Does Envly inject variables into applications at runtime?

Accepted Answer

Not currently. Envly focuses on managing, retrieving, importing, and exporting environment variables. Its documented CLI workflow exports .env files rather than injecting variables directly into a running process.
